Arts for All - Open Studio

Monday mornings we open the artspace for people of all ages and abilities to drop by and work on their own art. If you need a little inspiration we will also offer a different art invitation each week. This is a casual, friendly space where you can explore your own creativity.

​Creative Kids

Fun classes for kids 6-12yrs. We will work with a variety of different art materials to learn technique and express ourselves. 

Mondays, 3pm and 4.15pm (during term time)

​Knit & Natter

Everyone is welcome at our weekly gathering of yarn lovers. Bring your knitting, crochet, embroidery or other handicraft and work along side your peers. We also have plenty of yarn, needles and advice on hand if you are a beginner looking to learn. Tea and coffee is available along with plenty of friendly conversation. 

Occasionally we also hold a Night Knit and Natter for those unable to attend during a week day. This is usually held on a weekday evening from 7pm to 9pm. If you are interested in this option contact us at artstekauwhata@gmail.com and we will keep you in the loop.

​TK Ukelele Club

Beginner and experienced Ukelele lovers meet each Thursday evening for a little bit of strumming, a little bit of singing and a whole lot of fun. Under the tutelage of experienced music teacher, Chelsey Bennett, we learn a wide range of songs from different genres and eras. New members are welcome. If you are a beginner please get in touch in advance and we will arrange a little induction for you to build your confidence.

​Community Choir

Come along and sing for the joy of it. All voices are welcome in our Community Choir led by Jordana van Vliet. We meet each Thursday night from 5.30-6.45pm. Bring a clear slip folder and water bottle.

​Te Kauwhata Photography Club

The Te Kauwhata Photography Club meets at 7pm on the first Wednesday of the month. The group is comprised of local professional and amateur photographers seeking friends for shoots and professional development activities. Join their Facebook Group for more information and a weekly photo challenge. 


​Whanau Nights

Each term we run a themed week extending across our kids and youth programmes. In addition we offer a whanau night for families not otherwise engaged in our programmes to come in and create together. To date we have enjoyed Tie Dye and Life Drawing. Our next whanau night is themed around Stone Painting and Mandala. ​Copper Jewellery

In this fun workshop local jeweller Rohan Warhlich will teach you about the properties of copper. You will make your own ring, bracelet and pendant. Suitable for tweens, teens and adults.

​Holiday Workshops

We aim to run at least one special workshop during school holidays... sometimes just for the kids and sometimes for the whole whanau. These are usually free or low cost so keep a look out for what's coming up next. Recent workshops have included Lino Prints, Mosaics, Flower Press Making, Matariki Clay Play, Kaleidescopes, Spring Cushion Painting, Print and Poi. 


​Tea and Tāniko

Join tutor Mihi Waru and friends to learn the Māori art of twining. This versatile yarn craft is an incredibly mindful process and once you have learned the basics you can make bags, bookmarks, headbands, wall hangings, garments and more. All materials are provided. 
​
In Term 1 we are teaching taaniko as part of our Craft and Communi-tea Programme in Meremere on a Thursday morning 10am to 12noon. Drop ins welcome. Find us in the Meremere Hall or contact artstekauwhata@gmail.com for more info. 


​Jam Nights

We hold a termly Jam night for musicians and singers of all ages. Bring your instrument of choice and share your talent, collaborate with others and have a great time.

​Te Reo Māori roopu

Taught by Dr Wahineata Smith, our one term beginners class is a great foundation for people who want to:
  • learn correct pronunciation
  • learn basic waiata and karakia
  • develop confidence in delivering their own pepeha and mihi
  • gain a basic understanding of tikanga on a marae and at a powhiri 
  • start building their vocabulary
